Hiker airlifted from San Diego County trail for heat exhaustion
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A person hiking with friends on a San Diego County trail had to be rescued by a helicopter Sunday afternoon.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department received distress calls around 2:40 p.m. and rescue crews were able to locate one person who was suffering from heat exhaustion while hiking on a Los Peñasquitos Canyon trail with three friends.
Rescue crews hoisted the person into a helicopter to remove them from the trail, then took them by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities did not release any details on their condition as of Sunday evening.
Three local parks to close due to heat this month
Just this past week, the County of San Diego closed three parks for the month of August as the summer temperatures rise — El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower Preserve in Ramona.
In May, the county also closed two other parks located in or near Anza Borrego desert, Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park.
The parks will reopen Labor Day weekend.
